Lattice Semantic Nexus Ecosystem
Architecture, governance, research, and participation
The Lattice Semantic Nexus is the structured relationship between four distinct functions: Lattice Core, the LSN Foundation, the Lattice Research Institute, and Lattice Community Groups.
Their separation is deliberate. Architecture defines. Governance protects. Research analyses. Participation contributes.
The Lattice Semantic Nexus is not a separate institution above or alongside these components. It describes the structured relationship between them and the wider actors and systems that interact with them.
The Ecosystem Model
The Lattice Semantic Nexus separates the architecture itself from the institutions and communities that govern, study, and participate around it. Each function has a distinct responsibility and a defined relationship to the others.
Lattice Core
Architecture
The foundational seven-layer substrate architecture. Lattice Core defines the architectural conditions upon which downstream activity is designed to depend.
LSN Foundation
Governance & Stewardship
The governance and stewardship function responsible for the framework through which the canonical Lattice Core corpus is maintained and evolved, and through which the structural integrity of the architecture is protected across time.
Lattice Research Institute
Independent Research & Analysis
The independent research and analysis function of the ecosystem. The Institute investigates Lattice Core, systems that depend upon it, and the broader landscape of AI-native infrastructure.
Its research findings are independent of Foundation approval and do not themselves alter canonical architecture or governance.
Lattice Community Groups
Participation & Community Engagement
The participation and community engagement function of the ecosystem, providing a surface for practitioner knowledge, community perspective, stakeholder contribution, and broader engagement.
Lattice Community Groups enable participation without holding canonical architectural or governance authority.
Structural Separation
Different Functions, Different Authority
The four functions are not interchangeable divisions of a single organisation. Their separation exists so that architectural definition, institutional governance, independent analysis, and community participation remain distinguishable.
Research does not become governance because it produces a finding. Participation does not become canonical authority because it contributes knowledge or perspective. Governance does not become architecture because it stewards the canonical corpus.
One Architectural Root
Lattice Core is the architectural root of the ecosystem. Governance, research, participation, standards, specifications, implementations, and adoption occur around or downstream of that architecture.
The surrounding institutions and activities do not become the source from which Lattice Core is architecturally defined.
This preserves the distinction between the architecture and the structures that govern, analyse, participate around, or implement it.
Lattice Core
The Architecture
Lattice Core is the foundational seven-layer substrate architecture of the ecosystem. It establishes the architectural structure, responsibilities, boundaries, primitives, and conditions upon which downstream activity is designed to depend.
Its authoritative architectural definition belongs to the Lattice Core Architecture Document, or LCAD.
Architecture, Not Institution
Lattice Core is not itself the Foundation, the Research Institute, a community organisation, an implementation body, or a deployment organisation.
Keeping those functions distinct prevents operational, institutional, research, or participation activity from silently becoming the source of architectural definition.
LSN Foundation
Governance and Stewardship
The LSN Foundation provides the governance and stewardship function of the ecosystem. It administers the framework through which the canonical Lattice Core architecture and documentation are maintained and changed.
The Foundation also maintains documentary continuity and protects the structural integrity of Lattice Core through the applicable governance processes.
Governance Does Not Replace Architecture
The Foundation governs the conditions under which the canonical corpus is maintained and evolved. It does not acquire architectural authority merely because it provides governance and stewardship.
Architectural definition belongs to LCAD. Governance protects and stewards that architecture without substituting itself for the architecture.
Lattice Research Institute
Independent Research and Analysis
The Lattice Research Institute provides the independent research and analysis function of the ecosystem. It investigates Lattice Core, systems that depend upon it, and the broader technical and societal environment in which AI-native infrastructure may operate.
Research can test assumptions, identify weaknesses, examine consequences, and develop new lines of inquiry without requiring Foundation approval for its findings.
Research Is Not Governance
Independence allows research to examine and challenge the architecture and the institutions surrounding it without automatically changing either.
Research findings may inform future architectural, governance, standards, specification, implementation, or adoption consideration, but research itself does not carry canonical authority.
Lattice Community Groups
Participation and Community Engagement
Lattice Community Groups provide participation and community engagement pathways for practitioners, communities, stakeholders, and other participants interacting with the ecosystem.
Their role brings practical knowledge, community perspective, stakeholder contribution, and wider participation into the ecosystem without requiring those functions to sit within the Foundation or the Research Institute.
Participation Without Canonical Authority
Participation can contribute knowledge, experience, proposals, and perspective without transferring architectural or governance authority to the participation function itself.
This preserves meaningful participation while maintaining the distinction between contribution, governance, research, and architectural definition.
How the Components Relate
The ecosystem is organised around differentiated responsibility rather than institutional concentration.
Lattice Core defines. The architecture establishes the foundational structure and architectural conditions of Lattice Core.
The LSN Foundation governs and stewards. The Foundation administers the governance framework through which the canonical corpus is maintained and evolved, while protecting architectural integrity.
The Lattice Research Institute analyses. Independent research investigates the architecture, dependent systems, and their wider implications without requiring Foundation approval for its findings.
Lattice Community Groups participate. Practitioner knowledge, community perspective, stakeholder contribution, and broader engagement enter the ecosystem without assuming canonical or governance authority.
The result is an ecosystem in which each function can influence the wider environment without automatically acquiring the authority of another.
Architecture, Governance & the Canonical Corpus
Distinct Authority Domains
The separation of ecosystem functions is reflected within the canonical Lattice Core documentation. Governance, architecture, standards and conformance, detailed specification, explanation, and corpus mapping are kept distinguishable rather than being collapsed into a single source of authority.
LCGD governs the conditions under which the corpus is maintained and changed. LCAD provides the authoritative architectural definition. Standards and specifications derive from that architecture rather than silently redefining it.
Authority Remains Explicit
Governance can protect architecture without becoming architecture. Research can influence consideration without becoming canonical. Participation can contribute without acquiring governance authority.
The documentation framework preserves the same principle by assigning substantive authority according to subject matter and keeping explanatory and mapping functions distinct.
